The person who invent this famous brand name legend is Mr. Somkiat and Ms. Somchitt Supakowit, who are the author’s grandfather and grandmother. Mr. Somkiat was born in Lampang province, Thailand and graduated from Maejo Institute of Agricultural Technology in Chiang Mai province, Thailand (currently known as Maejo University). Mr. Somkiat began his career in Royal Forest Department of Thailand but resigned his position for his love of sales and marketing. Mr. Somkiet married Ms. Somchitt in 1945, after which they accumulated some money and moved to Bangkok. Mr. Somkiet rented a shophouse on Chakrapaddipong Road, Nang Lueng Sub-District, Pranakorn District, Bangkok in order to invest in a business. Based on the knowledge learned from Maejo Institute of Agricultural Technology makes him has some knowledge about herbs. So he took the initiative to make medicine for sale.
In 1947, acne treatment and wound dressings were released for the first time. Mr. Somkiet was the one who mixed the medicine. While Ms. Somchitt was the one who scooped the medicine into envelopes and packed it in boxes. After inventing the ingredients of the drug, The next step is naming the product. This is considered a matter that makes Mr. Somkiet think very hard. Until one day, during the Second World War, whilst he was resting under a tree behind Thepsirin Temple in Bangkok, Thailand, he saw a plane fly overhead with paratroopers jumping from the plane. When he saw the sky filled with opened parachutes, he decided to use “parachute” as his brand name and called his anti-bacterial formula, “Vises Powder” (Vises means magical in Thai language). With his image incorporated into the packaging, his wife’s name, Somchitt, was used to form the company named, Somchitt Dispensary Company Limited. The company was initially situated at no. 96 Chakrapaddipong Road, Nang Lueng Sub-District, Pranakorn District, Bangkok, Thailand. Vises Powder Parachute Brand was officially launched in Thai market on 19th August 1950. \ (•◡•) /
When “Vises Power Parachute brand began” to sell well, Mr. Somkiet began to produce new medicines. Mr. Somkiet tried to develop a formula for toothache (Anti-toothache Parachute Brand) and stomachic formula (Parachute M. Stom.). When the medicine was successfully developed in late 1957, Anti-toothache Parachute Brand and stomachic formula (Parachute M. Stom.) were officially launched in Thai market. But after selling for a short period of time, Mr. Somkiet decided to cease the production and distribution of Anti-toothache Parachute Brand and Parachute M. Stom. as some raw materials were very hard to find.
In 1962 The Ministry of Health issued a new regulation to change all medicinal product names that were misleading significances to their healing abilities. Therefore, Mr. Somkiat changed his product name from “Vises Powder Parachute Brand” to “Pises Powder Parachute Brand“, “Pises” simply means different from others. But one thing that has never changed is the quality, packaging and design that have always remained unique (>‿◠)✌
In 1963, Mr. Somkiet moved the company to No. 9/19 Soi Lat Phrao 23, Lat Phrao Road, Chandrakasem Sub-district, Chatuchak District, Bangkok and built a new factory. It was a one-story factory with a printing house, and in 1981, Mr. Somkiet rebuilt the factory again. It is a seven-story building. When Mr. Somkiet got older, Ms. Voracichittra, his only daughter, and her husband have come to take over. Ms. Voravichittra informed that in the days when Mr. Somkiet and Ms. Somchitt started producing medicine and releasing it for the first time. Mr. Somkiet is both the inventor and producer, and Ms. Somchitt is the one who scoops medicine into packets and boxed. There are subordinates who pedal tricycles for Mr. Somkiet to sell medicine at markets and drug stores. Sometimes Mr. Somkiet and Mrs. Somchitt have to peddle and sell, hand out advertising paper, until many pairs of shoes are worn out. Later it was developed to outdoor cinema. Or what the villagers are familiar with and call it “Nang Klang Plang” by traveling to show outdoor cinema in villages and communities all over the country, after showing outdoor cinema and selling medicine for a long time. And there was a song called Vises Powder, Parachute Brand, which was played on the radio. Later, Mr. Somkiet took another step in his foresight: he invest advertising and public relations media. Later in 1981, Mr. Somkiet hired Ms. Duangta Tungkamanee as a presenter, which had a very good response. So Mr. Somkiet hired Ms. Duangta Tungkamanee to be the presenter in many Pises Powder’s commercials.
